AIR FILTERS (CAR)
Car Air Purification -
Criteria for selection: 1. Filter type: Must have at a minimum a HEPA filter with carbon. 2. Lifetime of filter. 3. Price of filter. 4. Construction Quality of device. 5. Noise Ratings. 6. Price of device. 7. Warranty
Most vehicles do not have adequate filtration of cabin air or tests would not be coming back with high estrogenic substances. The air in your vehicle's cabin ranks among the worst of all the places you frequently spend time. But, remember... it's all about the filter.
Just as with the room air purifiers, we eliminated the SMART/SMARTER/SMARTEST rankings because really you are free to choose any product that uses a HEPA with carbon filter. Purifiers without a filter or without those elements in the filter are a deal-breaker for me.
I picked two devices of different price levels. Those who want a higher quality device should have some good options. There's a boatload of cheap cupholder size portable air purifiers out there. Many of them even have HEPA filters, but I just couldn't get behind any of them because for $40 or so, I feel like the quality just isn't going to be there. But if you find one you like and it meets the filter criteria and moves enough air, go for it! Believe it or not, though, I've come up with an even less expensive option for you...
Most vehicles won't come with a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Absorbing) w/carbon cabin air filter installed, but they are available for most vehicle models from aftermarket sources. Using your vehicle's own ventilation system might be the cheapest way to remove hormone disruptors and other toxic gasses and particulates from cabin air. Just grab your owner's manual, find out where the cabin air filter is (NOT the air intake filter for the engine), and swap it out with a high quality HEPA filter. They cost about the same as a regular filter. I found one for my Tacoma for about $20. Just keep up with the replacement frequency as recommended by the manufacturer. See link below for a good brand and source.

Layne's Notes:
This vehicle cabin air purifier can sit on your dash or hang on your headrest down the back of your front seats with included hardware. Or it can sit on the back floor or on the center console. There is also a suction cup mounting device included to stick it to a window. Has an edgy aesthetic. Swedish design. I have this in my truck and I like it.

CAR AIR FILTER PREMIUM GUARD
PureFlow cabin air filters help you breathe easier with four unique layers of media that work together to trap airborne contaminants in your car.
Layne's Notes:
A great option is to do whole vehicle cabin air filtration using your vehicle's ventilation system, simply replace your existing cabin air filter with a HEPA w/carbon filter from Premium Guard.
Click on this Amazon link, then find the "CABIN AIR FILTERS PUREFLOW" box, click on the Find your Make and Model button and enter your vehicle information. When your filter comes up, be sure and select the Pureflow HEPA box or you'll get a plain filter. Bada bing!
AIR FILTERS (HOME)
Indoor Room Air Purification -
Criteria for selection: 1. Filter type: Must have at a minimum a HEPA filter with carbon and a pre-filter. 2. Customer Service Reviews. 3. Lifetime of filter. 4. Price of filter. 5. Noise Ratings. 6. Construction quality of device. 7. Price of system.
We eliminated the SMART/SMARTER/SMARTEST rankings because really you are free to choose any product that uses a HEPA with carbon filter and has enough power and filter capacity to handle the square footage in the room. I like a pre-filter because you can take it off and wash or vacuum off macro particles of lint, pet hair, etc, which keeps it off the HEPA filter.
That said, I will share what I found as I reviewed highly rated Room Air Purifiers. I kept coming back to one brand... Alen Corporation's BreatheSmart line. I couldn't find any other brands that met the criteria better. In fact, of the dozens and dozens of air purifiers Consumer Reports tested, Alen's Breathe 75i was #1 for 2023. (Accessed 2/6/23). CR places a high priority on how well a purifier performs at lower speeds not louder than 50 decibels (about the noise level of the hum of a refrigerator.)
I also wanted to be able to turn off the panel lights at night. Check.
Customer Service reviews are largely positive.

BATH TOWELS
When searching for bath towels that are free from hormone disruptors, it's essential to look out for certain materials and finishes that may contain such chemicals. Here are a few things you should aim to avoid:
Synthetic Fabrics: Towels made from synthetic materials such as polyester, nylon, or acrylic often undergo chemical treatments during manufacturing that can include hormone-disrupting substances. Opting for natural fibers is a safer choice.
Stain-Resistant or Wrinkle-Free Finishes: Some bath towels are treated with chemicals like perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) to make them stain-resistant or wrinkle-free. These chemicals have the potential to be hormone disruptors, so it's advisable to steer clear of towels with such finishes.
Antibacterial Treatments: Certain antibacterial treatments applied to towels can contain triclosan or triclocarban, which are chemicals known to disrupt hormone function. Look for towels that don't claim to have antibacterial properties, or choose options that use natural antibacterial agents.
Chemical Dyes and Bleaches: Vibrant or overly bright-colored towels might be dyed with chemicals that can be hormone disruptors. Similarly, towels bleached with chlorine-based agents may contain traces of harmful substances. Opt for towels that use natural or low-impact dyes and are free from chlorine bleach.
Certified Organic or Oeko-Tex Standard 100: To ensure the absence of hormone disruptors, consider towels that are certified organic or meet the Oeko-Tex Standard 100. These certifications indicate that the towels have been tested for harmful substances and comply with strict safety standards.
By paying attention to the materials, finishes, and certifications of bath towels, you can make more informed choices to avoid potential hormone disruptors and select towels that prioritize your well-being.
Look for organic towels made from cotton, bamboo, or hemp.

BEDDING
When searching for hormone disruptor-free bedding, there are several factors to consider and certain things you should aim to avoid. Here are some guidelines:
Synthetic Fabrics: Steer clear of bedding made from synthetic materials such as polyester, nylon, acrylic, or rayon. These materials often undergo chemical treatments during production and may contain hormone-disrupting substances. Opt for natural fiber options instead.
Flame Retardants: Flame retardant chemicals are commonly used in bedding, especially in mattresses and mattress covers. These chemicals, such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), have been linked to hormone disruption. Look for bedding that is labeled as flame-retardant-free or uses natural fire-resistant materials like wool.
Stain-Resistant Treatments: Bedding that claims to be stain-resistant is often treated with chemicals like perfluorinated compounds (PFCs). These chemicals can have hormone-disrupting effects. Avoid bedding with stain-resistant finishes and opt for natural, untreated fabrics.
Formaldehyde and VOCs: Formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be present in bedding materials, including adhesives, dyes, and finishes. These substances can act as hormone disruptors. Look for bedding that is labeled as formaldehyde-free and low in VOCs.
Certified Organic: Choose bedding made from certified organic materials, such as organic cotton, organic wool, or organic linen. Organic certifications ensure that the materials have been grown and processed without the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
Oeko-Tex Standard 100: Look for bedding that meets the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification. This certification ensures that the bedding has been tested for harmful substances, including hormone disruptors. It provides assurance of the product's safety and compliance with strict standards.

CAR FRAGRANCE
Synthetic Fragrances: Many conventional air fresheners contain synthetic fragrances that can contain a mixture of potentially harmful chemicals. These chemicals may include phthalates, which are known hormone disruptors. Look for air fresheners that use natural or essential oil-based fragrances instead.
Phthalates: Phthalates are commonly used as fragrance carriers in air fresheners. They have been linked to hormone disruption and other health concerns. Choose air fresheners that explicitly state they are free from phthalates or those that use alternative fragrance carriers.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): Air fresheners may release volatile organic compounds, which can contribute to indoor air pollution. These compounds can include formaldehyde, benzene, and toluene, which have been associated with hormone disruption. Opt for air fresheners that are labeled as low in VOCs or free from these harmful compounds.
Chemical Propellants: Some air fresheners utilize chemical propellants, such as aerosols, that can release hormone-disrupting substances. Look for air fresheners that use pump sprays or other non-aerosol alternatives.

CARPETS AND RUGS
When searching for carpets and rugs that are free from hormone disruptors, there are certain things you should aim to avoid. Here are some guidelines:
Synthetic Materials: Carpets and rugs made from synthetic fibers, such as nylon, polyester, acrylic, or polypropylene, often contain chemicals that can act as hormone disruptors. Opt for natural fiber options instead.
Stain and Water Repellents: Carpets and rugs treated with stain or water repellents may contain chemicals like perfluorinated compounds (PFCs). These chemicals have the potential to be hormone disruptors. Look for products that do not use stain or water-repellent treatments.
Flame Retardants: Flame retardant chemicals are commonly used in carpets and rugs to meet fire safety standards. However, some of these chemicals, such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), have been associated with hormone disruption. Seek out carpets and rugs that are labeled as flame-retardant-free or use natural fire-resistant materials.
Adhesives and Glues: Carpets and rugs are often installed using adhesives and glues that may contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs can contribute to indoor air pollution and may act as hormone disruptors. Look for carpets and rugs that use low-VOC or VOC-free adhesives during installation.
Certified Organic or Natural Materials: Choose carpets and rugs made from certified organic or natural materials. Organic carpets are made from fibers that have been grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Natural materials like wool, jute, or sisal are also good options.
Certifications and Labels: Look for carpets and rugs that carry certifications or labels indicating they are free from hormone disruptors or harmful chemicals. Examples include products certified by organizations like Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) or those labeled with "hormone-disruptor-free."

Research the particular pollutants you wish to target (e.g., formaldehyde, benzene, xylene) and choose plants that have been shown to effectively remove those pollutants.
Indoor Tolerance: Consider the specific lighting conditions and temperature ranges in your home. Choose plants that can thrive indoors and tolerate the lighting levels available in the intended locations.
Low Maintenance: Select plants that are easy to care for and fit your lifestyle. Some plants require more attention and care than others. Choose plants that align with your ability and willingness to provide the necessary care.
Personal Preference: Consider your personal aesthetic preferences and the overall design and decor of your home. Choose plants that complement your style and create a pleasant atmosphere.
What to Avoid:
Toxic Plants: Avoid plants that are toxic to pets or children if you have any concerns. Some common house plants, such as certain varieties of lilies, philodendrons, or pothos, can be toxic if ingested.
Allergenic Plants: If you or your family members have known allergies or sensitivities, it's best to avoid plants that may trigger allergic reactions. Examples include plants with heavy pollen or plants from the Asteraceae family (e.g., daisies, chrysanthemums).
High Maintenance Plants: If you have limited time or lack experience in plant care, avoid plants that require high maintenance or have specific care requirements.

SHOWER CURTAINS
When searching for a shower curtain and liner that are free from hormone disruptors, there are certain things you should aim to avoid. Here are some guidelines:
Vinyl or PVC Materials: Shower curtains and liners made from vinyl or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) often contain hormone-disrupting chemicals, such as phthalates. These chemicals can be released into the air and come into contact with your skin during showering. Opt for alternatives to vinyl or PVC.
Phthalates: Phthalates are commonly used as plasticizers in shower curtains and liners. These chemicals have been associated with hormone disruption. Look for products explicitly labeled as phthalate-free.
Flame Retardants: Some shower curtains and liners may be treated with flame retardant chemicals, which can include hormone disruptors. Choose products that are flame-retardant-free or use natural fire-resistant materials.
Antibacterial Treatments: Certain shower curtains and liners may have antibacterial treatments that contain triclosan or triclocarban, which are hormone-disrupting chemicals. Look for products that do not claim to have antibacterial properties or choose options that use natural antibacterial agents.
Natural and Non-Toxic Materials: Seek out shower curtains and liners made from natural materials like organic cotton, hemp, linen, or polyester fabric. These materials are less likely to contain hormone disruptors compared to vinyl or PVC.

YARDCARE
When searching for grass and plant fertilizers that are free from hormone disruptors, there are certain things you should aim to avoid. Here are some guidelines:
Synthetic Chemical Fertilizers: Avoid fertilizers that are composed primarily of synthetic chemicals, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium compounds. These synthetic fertilizers may contain hormone-disrupting substances or contribute to hormone imbalances in plants and the environment.
Pesticides and Herbicides: Fertilizers that include pesticides or herbicides should be avoided as they may contain chemicals that can act as hormone disruptors. Opt for fertilizers that are free from these additives or choose organic options that use natural pest and weed management methods.
Hormone-Based Fertilizers: Some fertilizers contain plant growth hormones, such as auxins, cytokinins, or gibberellins. While these hormones are naturally occurring in plants, excessive use or imbalance can disrupt natural hormone regulation. Consider avoiding fertilizers that explicitly state the inclusion of added hormones.
Heavy Metals: Check the composition of the fertilizer to ensure it is free from heavy metals like lead, cadmium, mercury, or arsenic. These metals can be harmful to both plants and the environment and may have hormone-disrupting effects.
Certified Organic: Look for fertilizers that are certified organic by organizations like the OMRI. Organic fertilizers are derived from natural sources and typically have stricter regulations regarding the use of hormone disruptors, synthetic chemicals, and heavy metals.
Natural and Sustainable Alternatives: Consider using natural and sustainable fertilizers such as compost, well-rotted manure, seaweed extracts, bone meal, or fish emulsion. These options provide nutrients to plants without the risk of hormone disruption or harmful chemical additives.

MONTANA GROW ORGANIC SI AMENDMENT
Montana Grow Organic Silicon Granules with Amorphous Volcanic Tuff. Improve Soil Textures
Layne's Notes: I am a big believer in volcanic sourced soil amendments. Soils are often depleted of minerals and volcanic ash is a rich source of minerals from igneous rock. Silicon is an important component of plant structure. This is OMRI certified, and therefore a clean source. You should use roughly 1.25 lbs per sq. yard (750g per sq. meter). It's heavy, but not to worry, shipping is free! Research volcanic ash. It's cool.
DISTILLED WHITE VINEGAR
Lucy's Family Owned - Natural Distilled White Vinegar, 1 Gallon (128 oz) - 5% Acidity (White Vinegar, Gallon)
Layne's Notes: If you have problems with crabgrass or dandelion outbreaks in the spring, you can use corn gluten, but it's expensive and hard to find certified. I suggest filling a spray bottle with straight white vinegar and spray a direct stream on emerging weeds. It's just acetic acid, which won't hurt anyone. But it breaks down plant cell walls, in any plant it gets on, so aim well.
